The Interest Of Modern English Was Never About Maximized Sales Or Making Hits! It Was Always About Making ART! Formed In Colchester Essex England In 1977 By Robbie Grey Vocals Modern English Sold Over 4 Million Records In The US Alone. Members Included Gary McDowell Guitar Vocals And Michael Conroy Bass Vocals Richard Brown Drums And Stephen Walker Keyboards And Ted Mason Guitar Vocals . Though Known For Their Classic Hit “I Melt With You ” The Band Had Several Top Billboard Hits Including Richochet Days Hands Across The Sea 16 Days After The Snow Chapter 12 To Name A Few. The New Reformed Band Of 2009 Mixes The Influences Of World Music Combining Traditional Indian Instruments Sitar Sourangi Tablas With Classical Strings Harps As Well As Western Rock Guitars/drums And Sampling. Something Robbie Grey And Ted Mason Had Been Working On Since The Late 80’s Early 90’s To Reinvent A Band That Lived In A Multicultural City London. “How Can You Be Part Of The Culture Of London If You Walk Out Of Your Home And See A Diversity Of People From All Over The World That Built The British Empire But It Is Not Reflected In Your Music.” This Is A Sentiment That Transformed Modern English From An Anglo Saxon Sound To A New Multicultural/global Sound Which Was The Idea Of Robbie Grey And Ted Mason During The Late 80’s. At Least 80 Songs Were Written Between The Two Of The Band Members That Were Never Released Because Of The Politics Of Money In The Music Business. The History Of The Band Is A Long One. The Band's LP Mesh & Lace Released By 4AD Records Was One Of Their First Successes. It Was Much Inspired By The Sound Already Created By Bands Such As Joy Division. The Follow-Up After The Snow Was A Minor Revelation And A Gold Record In The U.S. As They Introduced Warmth And Strong Guitar Harmonies Most Notably On The Classic "I Melt With You" . The Album Richochet Days Had A Crisper Production And Included The Hits Richochet Days And Hands Across The Sea Selling Over 500 000 Units. Next Came Stop Start Which Was The Last Record Modern English Recorded For Sire And Was A Bitter Disappointment In Sales Because Producers Were More Interested In Producing An American Sound Than Expanding On The Idea Of An Art Band’s Personal Vision. Consequently The Album Is Out Of Print. In 1990 The Band Released Pillow Lips On The TVT Label Selling 300 000 Units. Robbie Grey And Band Member/manager Ted Mason Co-Wrote And Produced A Second Release For TVT Recordings Which Incorporated Live Strings And Multiple Harmonies. The Ambitions Of The Band Received Very Little Enthusiasm From TVT. Locked Into Contractual Obligations With TVT Grey Subsequently Put The Band On Hold To Study And Travel And Mason Handled The Legal Issues Of Getting Out Of The TVT Deal. While Mason Handled The Legal Jungle Robbie Traveled Through Asia Practicing Complete Celibacy And Ended Up In The Middle Of An Armed Insurrection In India. Although A Friend Of Grey And A Musician Mason Had Been Handling Legal Matters With Manager Peter Friedman Since The Mid 80’s. Consequently In 1995 They Successfully Managed To Get Out Of Their Contractual Obligations With TVT And Signed With Terry Ellis’ Label Imago. The Album Was Considered The Most Adventurous Album The Band Ever Produced And Was The New Direction That Robbie Grey And Ted Mason Were Working On Since The Late 80’s/early90’s A Multicultural Sound For The Band. It Included Indian Musicians Live Strings A Small Chamber Orchestra And Samples Collected Through Robbie Grey’s Travels Through India. Ted Mason Had Been A Back Up Guitarist/producer For Modern English Since 1980 Working With Their Producers And Managers And Touring When The Line Up Was In Peril. He Had A Close Relationship With The Late Peter Friendman Manager Who Encouraged Mason To Take The Band To A New Direction Musically In The Early 80’s. To Broaden Their Musical Horizons Would Not Become A Reality Until The Late 80’s. Peter Friedman Had Inherited A Difficult Job Robbie’s Genius And Ego Had Always Caused Problems Within The Band Members But It Extended To Compromising The Actual Success Of The Band. Mason Became Manager Reluctantly In The Late 80’s With Peter Friedman And Worked To Get Modern English Off The TVT Deal In 1990. Regardless Of The Contributions Of All The Members Rotating Through Modern English Robbie Grey Never Gave Any Member Full Autonomy To Decide Where The Band Should Go. He Has Toured With The Name Modern English Without Any Of The Original Members. However Robbie Grey Was The Driving Force Behind The Band Until His Partnership With Ted Mason. Though Not To Compare The Talent Of Lennon And McCartney Mason And Grey Were Very Tight As Friends And Band Members. Robbie Grey Was Very Receptive To Mason’s Ideas Of A Multicultural Sound Reflecting The Diversity Of London Robbie Lives In Clapham Common A Mixed Neighborhood . They Were Also Inseparable As Friends For Over A Decade. Their Recordings Together On Cassette Include At Least 100 Unreleased Tracks Some Of Which Are Classical Music Without Vocals Mason Is A Classical Musician And Recordings Exist From Late Night Sessions At Robbie Grey’s Home With No Band Format. Holidays Birthdays Were All Spent Together. At An Older Age Robbie Had Found A Friend He Could Trust And Mason Found The Same. Mason Had Always Been Behind The Scenes Of Modern English From 1979 But By The Late 80’s He Was Actually Working With Management. He Had Started A Relationship With Grey That Would Last For Almost A Decade And A Half. Modern English’s Everything Is Mad With Robbie Grey Vocals Guitar Matthew Shipley Keyboards And Ted Mason Vocals Guitar Had Been The Culmination Of A Decade Worth Or New Ideas And Was The Last Album Released Before The Reformation Of Modern English In 2009 And The 2 New Albums To Be Released In 2009 By Mi5 And EMI Entitled “The Road To Mecca” And “Evolution.” The New Modern English Will Be Touring With UB 40’s Ali Campbell In The US In 2009 And With Many Of The Artists On Mi5 Papa Wemba Jeff Beck Lagbaja In 2009.
